Fonchen Lord was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She received her BA at Harvard-Radcliffe and her MA in History at Washington University, St. Louis. She and her husband, William Lord, had four children. They lived in Maine until 1949 and then moved permanently to Lakeland, Florida. Fonchen was active in local and national art associations and championed artists and abstract art throughout her life. Her paintings and sculptures spanned more than fifty years.
